The Codington County Sheriff’s Office is a full-service office providing Civil Process, Detention, Warrant Service and Law Enforcement services for the 700 square miles that make up Codington County, as well as the municipalities of Florence, Wallace, South Shore, Henry, Kranzburg and the village of Waverly.

Our Sheriff

Brad Howell, Codington County Sheriff is a lifelong resident of South Dakota, born and raised in Milbank.  Following his graduation from the Alexandria Tech School, he began his career in law enforcement.    Brad was hired by the Milbank Police department in 2002 as a police officer.  In 2008, he was hired as a Deputy Sheriff for Codington County.  In 2010 he was promoted to the position of Sergeant, he served in that capacity for 5 years.  In 2015, Brad was promoted to Chief Deputy, and assisted with the daily operations of the Sheriff’s Office.  He took office as the Codington County Sheriff on January 1st, 2017. Brad serves on many local Boards and organizations, currently serving on the Waverly-South Shore School Board, and Watertown Rotary and a Watertown Lions member.  He also participates on the LATI Advisory Board, the Northeast Tech HS Board, and many more.  A favorite assignment is serving as a DARE instructor, to impact the youth of our community. He has instituted many new programs to the Sheriff’s Office to benefit the public, while striving to maintain fiscal responsibility and minimize taxpayer liability. “I am honored to serve the Citizens of Codington County as your Sheriff, and I am deeply committed to keeping our communities, families and property safe by providing the best, most professional law enforcement services possible at all times.”  Brad also enjoys spending time with his family, wife Cheri and two daughters, Robin, and Braden. The Codington County Sheriff’s Office was established in 1878. The Office is responsible for law enforcement protection to all 700 square miles that make up Codington County, including the communities of Watertown, Kranzburg, Waverly, South Shore, Florence, Wallace, and Henry. The Codington County Regional Detention Center is under the Office of Sheriff and provides inmate care for Codington County as well as the contract counties of Clark, Hamlin, Deuel, Grant, and Kingsbury Counties. Codington County Detention Center

About The Detention Center Matt Blackwelder is the Chief Corrections Officer of the Codington County Regional Detention Center, which is a 96 bed facility providing inmate care for Codington County as well as the contract counties of Clark, Hamlin, Deuel, Grant and Kingsbury Counties. The Detention Center is a co-located facility providing juvenile care as well as holding all sentenced and pretrial adult inmates. The Codington County Regional Detention Center provides work release functions as ordered by the court and the work release rules set by the Detention Center. The Detention Center also serves as a 24/7 sobriety checkpoint, carrying out all court ordered sobriety checks 24 hours a day. It is the mission of the Codington County Regional Detention Center to provide a safe, humane and secure place for the detention of all persons committed to the custody of Codington County and all contract jurisdictions. The Sheriff’s Office must protect the community and securely hold persons that the Court has determined pose a threat or have a debt to pay to society. Our mission is not to punish, but to provide an environment to carry out the orders of the Court in a cost-effective manner. The Sheriff recognizes that our staff is our biggest asset and strives to promote education and foster careers within the Detention Center. It is the goal of the Codington County Regional Detention Center staff to return inmates to the community in better condition, physically and emotionally, understanding that rehabilitation is a personal decision that can only be made by the individual inmate. The Sheriff provides service to the community through inmate labor by promoting effective work-release programs and maintaining employment of sentenced inmates within the guidelines set forth by this office.
